Cable tie of width from 2.5 to 13mm, length 100 to 1020mm

What is a cable tie ?

One cable tie (sometimes called a cable clamp or Serflex) is a mechanical device designed to maintain a flexible hose (flexible or durite) attached to a rigid tube, exercising a uniform peripheral pressure in order to ensure the sealing of the joint. This simple accessory, in appearance, has proved to be indispensable to ensure the safe connection of hoses with other components (connections, fittings, etc.), thus avoiding leaks of liquid or air in the installations.

The genesis of cable tie dates back to the 1920s, when the first screw model was developed in England for automotive needs. A few decades later appeared the self-locking plastic version (cable fastener) invented in 1958 by Maurus C. Logan, under the brand Ty-Rap, originally intended to group bundles of electrical cables into aeronautics. Since then, this small object has far exceeded the original industrial framework and is now employed in almost all sectors.

Today we find clamps everywhere : in automobiles (fixing radiator hoses, fuel or duct pipes, etc.), in plumbing (ensuring the sealing of pipe fittings), in electrical/electronics (organizing and maintaining cables together to avoid entanglement or damage), in industry (maintenance of equipment and machinery), and even for domestic use in the garden or at home. From the clamping of a hydraulic hose under the hood of a car to the fastening of a simple watering hose on a guardian, the cable tie adapts to a multitude of needs thanks to its many variants.

Concrete case : prevent a leak in an automobile engine

During a review, a mechanic observed a slight leakage of coolant from a radiator hose. The cable tie metal of origin was loosened over time. By installing a new and tight stainless steel screw collar, it again ensures the sealing of the connector. The liquid no longer leaks, the engine is protected from possible overheating, and the repair was done in a few minutes for a derisory cost. This case illustrates the importance of a reliable collar in the automotive sector : A simple failed collar can cause costly breakdowns, while a good European-made collar guarantees a lasting fixation of critical hoses.
